I use this flour when making scones, bread or pancakes and this yummy gluten free chocolate mug cake
This Gluten Free Flour Recipe is a great alternative to shop bought mixes
I have to say up front that this isn’t my first preference when cooking baked goods. Â My first preference is to use coconut flour. However, if I need a gluten free flour recipe other than coconut flour then this is the one I use. Â If you have been using gluten free flours for awhile you will know that most of the shop bought flours are usually made up of corn, soy and rice flours not to mention the extra fillers to add flavour and texture.
So why make your own Gluten Free Flour Recipe?
A large proportion of commercially prepared gluten-free foods are made using soy flour. Soy flour is rich in protein and is a good source of dietary fibre. Â However, in recent years, soy protein has fallen out of favour. Â Research is showing that consumption of excess soy protein can lead to many health problems including hypothyroidism, dementia, and hormonal imbalances. People are now looking for gluten free alternatives to soy. Â So what are the options.
- Garbonza bean or chick pea flour
- Sourghum flour
- Rice and corn flour
- Quinoa, Millet, Amaranth flours
- Potato starch
Unfortunately these gluten free flours are all high in carbohydrates and low in dietary fibre. Â That’s why my first preference of gluten free flour is to use coconut flour. You can read about coconut flour here.
However I believe that if you are wanting to bake with a gluten free flour then your best option is to make your own rather than the store bought product.
