Oil Pulling – Can It Help With Fighting Disease

Coconut-Oil-Post-Oil Pulling

Have you ever heard of Oil Pulling?

Disease – starts in your mouth, right?

Recently I visited my dentist as I was sure I had at the worst a cavity and at the best I had developed sensitive teeth.  After taking some x-rays and finding nothing, she recommended that I take a script for antibiotics in case of an infection.  Now I could of filled the script and taken the antibiotics only to find that there was no infection, which of course for those who know my personal story, would know that this is too risky for someone who has had too many bouts with candidiasis.

Needless to say I didn’t fill the script but settled for the other choice and that was; sensitive teeth.  About 2 months on and the pain in my teeth which has now become pain in my face, my  jaw, my throat and somedays up into my temple and across my eye has sent me to my doctor as I’m now suspecting at the worst an infection.  Well I’m glad it wasn’t as at least I don’t have to deal with antibiotics.  What I’m not glad about is the “possible” diagnosis.  Neuralgia.

Next thing is I have a referral and an appointment in 2 days time to see a neurologist about this condition.  Now while it is not life threatening, and I’m not alone as a surprising amount of people deal with the symptoms of Neuralgia every day, but it’s the pain that it causes which is very disconcerting.  And I am not someone who’s not able to cope with pain as it’s almost been second nature to me.  So my first step before considering any traditional medical treatment is Coconut OIl.

Can Oil Pulling Help With a Neurological Disease

I pull out my book, “Oil Pulling Therapy” written by Bruce Fife and look for any references to damaged or irritated nerves and find something that I knew but had forgotten.

Our mouths are the entryway into our bodies for bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.  Hundreds of billions of microscopic organisms inhabit our mouths and digestive tracts.  Some of these organisms are beneficial and others are not.  However, all are potentially harmful.  Even the beneficial organisms can become deadly if they find entrance into the bloodstream.  Microbes can seep into the bloodstream through open sores and wounds or through inflamed tissue…….the human mouth has far more germs than a dog’s mouth.

People who have serious dental problems, like advanced gum disease or a tooth abscess, are most likely to pass microbial invaders into the bloodstream, but any cut or ulcer in the mouth can do the same.  If you have gingivitis, as most do to one extent or another, simply brushing your teeth each day causes the gums to bleed.  This provides germs an entryway into your bloodstream.

Now while I don’t have gum disease I have suffered with ulcers in my mouth for most of my life.  Do I think this has something to do with neuralgia? I’m not sure. But it got me thinking about something my doctor asked me?  “Have I had shingles?” Shingles can be a cause of Neuralgia.  Shingles is a virus.  Now I haven’t had Shingles and nor do I want to but less than 2 years ago I had a severe case of Chicken pox that I caught from my children.  Do I think this has caused the Neuralgia – not sure on that one either.  I may never know what’s causing it and the nerve that’s causing the pain may not be found either but my point is if there is a link between the health of the mouth and the health of the body then I’m going to do all I can to prevent any further disease in this one.

Update – Since writing this article my journey with suspected Neuralgia has ended positively – To read the results and the rest of the story click here.

Oil Pulling – not just a thing of the past

Oil pulling is not a new invention.  It’s been used for generations in Ayurvedic medicine. Its a very simple, harmless and inexpensive treatment for dental health.  Teeth become whiter, gums pinker and breath fresher.  However the other plus is that oil pulling soaks up or pulls disease-causing bacteria and their toxins out of the bloodstream through a vein under the tongue.  While it cannot be medically proven the testimonies of people being cured of health problems is endless.

It’s easy as 1.2.3. From Bruce Fife’s Book “Oil Pulling Therapy”

Start on an empty stomach, take a drink of water before hand.

  1. Take 2-3 teaspoons of liquid coconut oil into your mouth.
  2. Suck, push and pull the oil through the teeth and gums. The solution will turn a milky white – this means it’s working
  3. Swish the oil continually in the mouth for 15-20 minutes then discard the oil in the rubbish

Rinse out your mouth and follow with a drink of water.  Follow this procedure at least once a day.

Let me know if you try the oil pulling and if it’s made a difference.

  1. I always find something new in your weekly posts to try! Tried the oil pulling, couldn’t swish for 15mins as my jaw gets sore, but after the first try my sore teeth actually felt better, not sure if this is the mind over matter thing as it probably won’t work that fast, but will try it everyday for a week and see if I can see any difference 🙂

    • Hi Turina, I don’t think it’s mind over matter, but even if it was it can’t do you any harm. Last year I had an infection in one of my teeth which was causing nerve pain all up the side of my face. I started pulling oil every day, twice a day. Each time I pulled the pain got better and the nerve symptoms slowly disappeared. While I still had to get work done on the tooth the infection cleared and the damage was not as bad as the dentist thought it was going to be. I really believe the oil pulling made a huge difference. Good luck with it. Let me know how you get on. 🙂 Kerry

  2. Hi,
I just found your site and am totally excited about it. I sent it on to my daughters and daughter in law.
I have been using coconut oil for quite some time but not as a main stay. I am going to start the Detox today.
You mentioned in your article in July of last year that you have Neuralgia. did the oil pulling fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    Verna

    • Hi Verna, great to hear from you and glad you are enjoying the website. Re: Neuralgia – My results in the end were negative in diagnosis of neuralgia. I have been meaning to post a follow up to that story so you have just reminded me that I must do it. Hope your detox goes well. 🙂 Kerry

      • Thank you.
I do have one more question. I didn’t get started on it today, I ended up having Grandchildren all day, which is great but when I have to cook for them, the first day is hard to resist.
I have done the Master Cleanse many times and have been pleased. I have also done 21 day water fasts which are good but draining. This one sounds really good in all respects. I do have Candida and that is why the MC cleanse didn’t do the best.
My question is…..I want to start tomorrow, but will be travelling on Wednesday which is good in itself but will I have to stop at many bathrooms or have accidents. I guess what I am asking is, is it best to do this cleanse near home and proper facilities! Ha!
        Thank you,
        Verna

        • Hi Verna, It is probably best to do the cleanse at home as the detox can be unpredictable. You may be running for the bathroom on the first day but it may not happen until the third day. It does affect people differently and that’s what I mean by being unpredictable. Also take it slowly and gently as any detox is going to put a drain on you initially, especially when you have conditions like candida happening in your body. Good luck. Keep me posted as to your progress.

  3. does oil pulling help if your already in pain. my lower left jaw, gums and teeth hurts and I feel like the pain in moving to the the front of my mouth. I have many fillings and root canals. I cant determine with tooth is hurting. what kind of oil do you use
