Homemade Natural Coconut Oil Toothpaste

So I ferment vegetables and pull oil, am I a hippy, maybe, more to the point I like to know what goes into my food and what goes into my body and my mouth.

That’s why I make homemade natural coconut oil toothpaste

If you have read my article about oil pulling I mention that our mouths are like doorways into our bodies.  Germs, bacteria, fungus and viruses grow at a rapid rate in our mouths leaving us open to infections and sickness that enters into our bloodstream.

I’ve had more than my fair share of mouth irritations. Impacted wisdom teeth, mouth ulcers, cold sores and my latest diagnosis of suspected neuralgia that sent pain soaring through my teeth, have all led me to look for alternative products for cleaning my teeth than just the standard shop bought toothpaste.  I had tried even the most expensive organic brands only to find that they are still filled with nasties and names that I can’t even pronounce.

I have one theory when I read labels on beauty or hygiene products: and that is  – if the ingredient list has words with more than 8 letters and there are more than 5 ingredients then I’m not interested.

It’s dead easy to make your own toothpaste and most households will have the ingredients listed.  The really great thing about this toothpaste is that your teeth feel clean!

A quick overview of what the ingredients do:

  • Baking soda – A mild abrasive that dissolves easily. In solution it will kill microorganisms and disease related bacteria. It will also neutralize and detoxify the bacterial acids and toxins that form in plaques.
  • Sea Salt – Slightly abrasive. In solution at higher concentrations it will kill on contact all microorganisms associated with infections in your mouth.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide – When hydrogen peroxide comes into contact with bacterial plaques, it breaks down very rapidly into oxygen and water. This helps to break up and destroy the thin bacterial layer on tooth surfaces. Since writing this recipe my daughter developed a reaction to hydrogen peroxide in that her gums had hundreds of small cuts and very tender. After researching and eliminating possibile causes we realised that it was the toothpaste. If you have any concerns about using hydrogen peroxide than it is safest to leave it out. The toothpaste will still be effective and good for you regardless.
  • Coconut oil – Antibacterial, antiviral and anti fungal.  Coconut oil also helps with whitening of teeth.
  • Peppermint oil – is an excellent digestive aid. It soothes and calms the digestive system when used internally or externally. The essential oil of peppermint can be applied to the skin or mouth to relieve pain.
  • Stevia – as it contains no sugars of any kind, stevia can’t cause cavities.  What it will do is curb your sugar cravings and recalibrate your blood sugar levels.

A great use of coconut oil and baking soda! For a fresher breath and cleaner teeth.

  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil (melted)
  • 10-15 drops of peppermint oil. Try experimenting with cinnamon or clove oil.
  • 1 tablespoon Hydrogen Peroxide (optional)
  • Stevia powder or liquid to taste
  • Water to mix
  1. In a bullet blender mix together baking soda, sea salt, coconut oil and peppermint oil.
  2. Add in stevia, taste and adjust accordingly.
  3. Add in hydrogen peroxide if using.
  4. Stir to combine.
  5. Add enough water to mix to a paste.

Because of the coconut oil, toothpaste will become solid in temperatures colder than 24 C or 75 F. If you keep the toothpaste in a glass jar you can steep it in some hot water to soften, otherwise you can microwave it for 5 secs at a time until it’s soft enough.

Too easy and it lasts for weeks.
